CASE STUDY — GLOBAL SHIPPING COMPANY
A signal the CEO put capital behind.
Predicting whether spot freight rates would settle above or below the forward price at expiry — a clean buy-or-sell signal for the chartering desk. The CEO committed $3M in capital on the model's first portfolio recommendation.
The Task
Spot vs. forward freight rates
Capital Committed
$3M
A forward price is a bet, not a certainty
A global shipping company's chartering desk trades against forward freight rates — prices locked in today for cargo that moves later. Whether the spot rate ultimately settles above or below that forward price determines whether a position makes or loses money. Getting a clean read on that direction, early and with confidence, is the difference between a trade worth making and one worth passing on.
A clean buy-or-sell signal
NEXUS was framed around the decision the chartering desk actually has to make: will spot freight rates settle above or below the forward price at expiry. Rather than a raw price forecast, the model produced a direct buy-or-sell signal — something the desk could act on immediately, and something whose real-world outcome would be unambiguous once the contract expired.
03 — THE RESULT
Real capital, on the first recommendation
MEASURED OUTCOME
capital committed on NEXUS's recommendation
MEASURED OUTCOME
67%
reduction in trade for the same expected P&L
The confidence to act came from the signal itself: the CEO committed capital on the model's very first portfolio recommendation, and the position that followed captured the same expected profit while trading 67% less — less capital exposed, less market risk carried, for the same expected return.
04 — THE IMPACT
A trading desk that risks less for the same return.
For a chartering desk, a sharper directional signal doesn't just mean better calls — it means the same expected profit can be captured with a smaller, less risky position. That's capital freed up for other trades, and less exposure riding on any single bet. It's also why leadership was willing to commit real money to the model's very first recommendation.
